His fine art photography has appeared in art galleries throughout the California bay area, his freelance work appears in local newspapers and online magazines, and he is currently working on a coffee table book covering developmentally challenged children. His work can be seen on bluephobos.com.

Art Director: Caiphus Moore received a BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. It's October and Patricia and Complex are heading to Miami for carnival so if you see them with a camera please pose for jouvay.com. We've gathered fete information that you can view on our site along with a printable pdf document listing the events. To the bay area folks heading to the carnival for the first time, don't hesitate to wear our shirts...we get much love on the East coast already. DJ Engineroom is part of the Caribcrew that's coming out with a carnival band this year and Patrcia is jumping with them along with our original chef Alesia and friends like Joanne plus more by carnival Sunday. Much thanks to madvibesradio.com for the online contest that awarded us 2 free costumes (we knew that the original caribcrew tune was done by Rusty and Double Xplojun)!! Maya's been posted to Singapore until December to find new recruits for our site and the manufacturer of all of those things marked "Made in China" that we want to put our logo on. Thanks to those who attended our Camouflage party. Labor day weekend found Maya in New York jumping on Eastern Parkway with Sesame Flyers' Kalahari Sunset section, Complex in LasVegas (pictures may come) and Patricia in LA at the Reggae Festival on the Green with Bounty Killer, and many more (pictures soon come and muchas gracias to Bounty's manager and afiwi.com). September was a real busy month from selecting models for our calendar and fashion show to having swimsuits made to co-ordinating our Square One concert to promoting a concert with WaWa, a new bay area Haitian band. So, if you see us in Miami going crazy at a party....do understand that we need to chill and just have fun.

NEW T-SHIRT LINE: FLAG COLORS. We still have a few orginal Jouvay.com T-shirts left. Purchase online now.

SQUARE ONE

Whilst doing an interview for the San Francisco carnaval magazine El Grito in 2001, Patricia told reporter Desa Philadelphia, "Our dream would be to bring a band like Square One to the bay area." Jouvay.com was only months old at that time. Now, just before our 2 year anniversary we did exactly that. Joyce Productions in Los Angeles had already booked Square One for her show on October 4th and helped us to include the bay area as a stop for this amazing band travelling all the way from Barbados. May 2001 we brought Barbadian idol Rupee to the bay and now we've brought Alison Hinds and the big band Square One. We must thank Oliver Jordan of the Barbados Tourist Authority for believing in our commitment to establish a long term relationship between the bay area and Barbados and helping us make this show a reality.

There are so many other people who helped to produce and promote this show, our biggest undertaking to date. First and foremost we'd like to thank Square One management (Mark Niles in particular), Alison, Andy and the entire Square One crew for putting on a great two hour show and being such lovely guests. Peter Balogh helped in so many ways including financial support and being Alison's personal driver (a job that was rivaled by many). He writes, "I do this because of my support of you three and what you are doing and that I like you all and want you to succeed." Thanks to Don McCarthy of the Barbados Tourist Authority, Rick Lozano of Air Jamaica, DJs Polo, Omar, Sake 1, Marco, Lenoir and radio DJs David McBurnie, Polo, Emmanuel Nado, General Patton, Tony Moses, and Henri Pierre. A big thank you to John Bent, Richard Gayle, Caiphus Moore, Jacques and Kimball's East, and all of those who volunteered time and energy. Thank you to promoters like Serendipitous Productions, Newvibe.com, HA Productions, Socaribbean International, the San Francisco Carnaval, VIPlineup.com, Cityflight.com, Angelmagik, Happsmag.com, and Jolofboy.com who sent emails out about or advertised the show. To all who supported and enjoyed...thank you for coming out. With time we'd like to see more articles like this in the Critic's Choice section of all bay area newspapers:

SEXY SOCA (Taken from the East Bay Express Critic's Choice, October 3rd, 2003)

While there are plenty of Carnaval revelers in Northern California, it's pretty rare that we get an authentic Caribbean outfit up in these parts. Barbados-based band Square One's first Bay Area appearance promises to be something special. Like most soca bands, Square One plays a modernized version of calypso, which sounds like a cross between dancehall reggae and disco. Its eighth album, Rhythm Party: Girlz Gone Wild, is filled with party anthems designed for maximum shimmy and shake; vocalist Alison Hinds helps the process by instructing dancers every step of the way: "Ladies/Wine pon ya man/Bend over/Do it for me." Meanwhile, "Bling Bling Girls" borrows from American hip-hop slang, bigging up women who "show dem belly ring." You can show yours Friday night at Kimball's East. 510-658-2555. (E.K.A.)

And here's what people said about the show:

A thank you goes out to all the folks at jouvay.com for bringing Alison Hinds & Square One to the Bay. The show Friday nite was fantastic and Square One proved that they could pull off an entire show solo. The 2 stage sets included classic hits like the Iron Bazodee, Carnival Baby, Faluma, Kitty Kat and newer hits like Turn It Up and cuts from the new CD, Girlz Gone Wild!

I felt especially proud to finally see a soca band perform at one of the top jazz/R&B venues in the nation....Kimballs East. This club has hosted jazz greats from Nancy Wilson to Dizzy Gillespie to R&B greats like Chaka Khan & Peabo Bryson. The sound system sounded great and the band kept the crowd on its feet. The crowd wasn't very big, though. Maybe it was the $30 price tag? But for a classy place like this and the fact that the band played 2 energetic sets, I thought the money spent was well worth it! Again, thanks jouvay. Keep doing what you do best...promoting Caribbean culture in the Bay! (Posted to ttcaliforniayahoo group by trini63sfo).

Yes, it was great! My friends pooped out on me so I was the "old woman alone" again, but I still had a good time. But Jouvay.com was well represented--I saw lots of Jouvay T-shirts--even besides the band members that were wearing them. BTW, thanks for bringing them in. Square One is one of my favorite soca bands. It was real nice to see them in a home setting. You know, more up close and personal. NEway, just wanted to say thanks for a good show. (email from Angela on our email list).

I bought 4 tickets and we all had a good time jumping up, doing de wave and whining (?). During the show I thought to myself that Square One was almost performing a community service for those of us starved of "west indian" or "caribbean" flavour in our everyday Bay Area lives. I lived in Toronto for over a decade before moving here and I hope the West Indian influence continues to grow here as it has there. (email from Peter on our email list).

And here's what was posted on the Square One site:

Thank you Jouvay.com for your hospitality and for a great presentation. I had a wonderful time and I look forward to working with you again. Blessings to Maya, Patricia, Antoine, Polo and Peter. To all those that I may not have mentioned who would have worked behind the scenes to make it a success thanks a million. Andy Armstrong, Square One.

NY Labor Day

The variety and abundance of Caribbean culture in New York is fascinating. In the middle of Brooklyn you'll see busy pan yards and band yards getting ready for Panorama or the parade, music blares, flyers for big parties are posted everywhere, and your belly will bloat as you walk one block on Church avenue because you've got to eat the mittai, the patties, the curry and roti, the jerk chicken, stewed chicken, Caribbean chow mein, corn soup, black pudding and fish fritters from each of the restaurants along the way. Years ago New Yorkers arrived at a fete around 2 am, but this year things were slightly different as the police closed most parties down at 4 am, some even earlier. It was not unusual to spread the word that in Miami during carnival the parties end at 8 am the next day, at least Socafest.

A brief run down of the weekend: Thanks to Machel for doing an interview for our site and wearing our shirt with Sesame Flyers on the WLIB truck (you too could look like a celebrity..order yours now); Panorama was a big event, but trying to find a fete afterwards that cops were not closing down proved hard. According to Ragoo from the Miami carnival, they did find a slamming backyard breakfast fete that went until noon on Sunday with performers like Machel and Bunji partying and dropping a song or two when the spirit hit them. Sunday's Dimanche Gras was also well attended and we were invited to be on the air with Bevan Springer of WLIB from the festival, and now we regularly add our West Coast flavor to the program (Sunday evenings 8-10 pm EST); Sunday night was a time to catch up with Guyanese folks (their new spot was the Fashion Cafe on Atlantic Avenue) and lines were long at the QC and Bishop's High school reunion held at the Courtyard in Brooklyn. Apart from seeing old classmates and friends, the buzz was in the air that right next door at Pork Knockers Elephant Man was going to perform. Sacha and Tanto Metro and Devonte did perform, but at 4 am the cops shut the parties down. According to the promoter Elephant Man was stuck in Manhattan. Photographer Ray Llanos deserves a special thank you for not only sharing his pictures with us (including some from Machel's show in Berkeley), but for taking care of us. And thanks to islandmix.com folks, especially photographer Insolidarity and section organizers/designers Karen and Brownskintrini who let us jump with the Kalahari Sunset section.

Despite the rain and the cold weather trucks streamed down Eastern Parkway with musicians like Wyclef, T-Vice, Sweet Micky, Sean Paul, Tanta Metro and Devonte, and Beenie Man. Maximus Dan, Faye Ann Lyons, Iwer George, Naya George and Machel sang for Sesame Flyers whilst the Barbados Cropover 2K4 truck had Square One, Keann, Timmi, Rupee, Peter Ram, Double Xplojun and a ton of Bajans wukking up real hard including leader of the mas' band Power X Four. Most cool was seeing Maisha who reloacted from the bay to NY that week wearing a jouvay.com T-shirt, sitting on the truck with Elephant Man and Bounty Killer sending a signal out dat we all over!! If by chance your flight from JFK is delayed, take a 5 minute cab ride to Sybils at 132nd and Liberty Avenue, (718) 835-9235 and indulge in the food.

WHAT's NEW on JOUVAY.COM

You've probably seen a crowd of 10,000 people lose their minds when an entertainer walks on stage, but have you been blessed to witness the mayhem and insanity that occurs when Machel Montano appears? Or better, have you gotten soaked, powdered, and energized beyond description as one of the crowd? Machel, who's still very young, has been performing for us for twenty years now and continues to popularize and revolutionize soca and Caribbean entertainment. He is to soca what Coltrane is to jazz, Marley is to reggae, and Sparrow is to calypso. With a long long list of awards for best male soca musician, best album, best band, over 14 albums and recordings with artists like Shaggy, Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Red Rat, Beenie Man, and Drupatee, Machel at twenty eight is an icon and an inspiration. During carnival you'll find him on the road chipping, in a fete you'll see him at the side wining, and on stage you'll witness this bundle of sexual energy continue to entertain as women in the front readily grope all parts of his body. But beyond the party, the wine up, and the performance he's a musical brainchild who produces and arranges award winning music, and he's a businessman with his own production and publishing company, and recording studio and is the director of Xtatic Ltd.. We've added a carnival page to our website. If you have links, corrections or additions please let us know. With time we hope to add a personalized page for each island/country/state filled with things jouvay.com experiences. Barbados was first: Our roots are well planted in Barbados. Complex was born in the States to Barbadian parents, but will let you know that his family populates a large portion of St. George and Christ Church, a rummage through his fridge will reveal an endless supply of conkie and flying fish, and anytime you visit Barbados he'll ask you to bring him a Bim and a Juicee. Maya has scoped nearly every bar, club, pool hall, and beach on the 166 square mile island since her dad moved there for work in 1998. Some of the information you'll find here won't reflect the real "Lonely Planet type tourist guide" as we stay with family, and eat home cooked meals, but many of the links below will lead you to tourist and entertainment information that will keep you happy in Barbados. 2 Juks for the Yankee $. Added to the photogallery: pictures from New York Labor Day, Machel Montano in Berkeley, our Camouflage party. Added to our interview page: video footage of Alison Hinds.

Of Interest

If you're in Singapore and looking for a great reggae band, you must check out The Bushmen. Their long and energetic sets include much of their own music which fuses reggae/dancehall, Asian and African beats, many Bob Marley tunes for which their followers know every word, timeless dancehall songs and the most upbeat Sean Paul hit. With locks down his back, Singaporean lead singer Syed may make you think you're in the Caribbean, after all Singapore is as tropical as it gets. The vibe of the 300 plus revellers at the Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Singapore (1 beer = $2.80 US) at 11 pm on a Sunday night gets stronger by the hour and no one seems to leave until 2:45 am when the band ends. The Bushmen also play a more calm set at Harry's on the Esplanade ( 1 mai tai = $8 US) every Wednesday in October. Unfortunately, the lead singer departs Singapore for Australia at the end of November so get your listen on or stay tuned for we'll keep track of this talented group who're responsible for introducing and growing the reggae/dancehall music on this island.

The Bushmen live in Singapore. September 2003.

There are some people you meet only one day out of the year, sometimes not even every year. But you meet them around the same hour at the same place and you manage to stay in touch via the internet. If you head to Trinidad carnival next year and you assemble behind the Stadium at around 3 am to play j'ouvert with 3Canal you'll probably bump into Rubadiri Victor. If you do, be sure to give him kudos for The Crossing Over Tour (a six week multi-media package of Trinbagonian artists of the under 35 generation). The tour included Ataklan (rapso), Sheldon Blackman and the Love Circle (the First Family of Trinidad and Tobago music), 12 (revolutionary fusion of calypso, reggae, rock, jazz and classical East Indian music), Jomo Lord (a vast range of musical influences from Reggae, Motown and ‘original Rhythm ‘n’ Blues to Hendrix and Led Zeppelin),
Chantwell (a pioneer Rapso group of the early 1990s who expanded the sound of Rapso by including Alternative Rock, Folk and Jazz), Gillian Moor (co-founder of the pioneering young rapso group Homefront, with recent work that is more melodic, with a calypso/folk/blues feel) and Solomon (reggae-inflected calypso rock/pop).

As the credits for the British film Bend it Like Bekham roll a Hindi version of soca singer Arrow’s song Hot Hot Hot plays. In mainstream American baseball culture, fans know very well the Bahamen’s rendition of Trinidadian Anslem Douglas’ soca song Who Let The Dogs Out. But the mother of soca is calypso or kaiso and the movie Calypso Dreams which showed at the Mills Valley Film Festival on October 7th and 12th, delves into that genre of music. Subtitles like Sobriquet, Sans Humanite or Lord Kitchener help to create a roadmap that guides audiences through the nuances of this rich and diverse art form filled with double and triple entendres ingeniously combining sexual, social and political commentary. Jouvay.com hosted the US premiere back in August and conducted an in depth interview with the director Geoffrey Dunn, but here's what a member of our email list posted to the ttcalifornia yahoo group:

Calypso Dreams Film & Tour. The movie was great! A definite "must-see." The aftershow was off the hook!! I really felt priviledged to be there. Sweetwater Saloon is a pretty small venue and it was sold out, so we were packed in there pretty tight, but it was all good. Lord Relator, Crazy, and Lord Superior all came on one by one and did a few songs, many from the movie, then Calypso Rose came on--WOW! She did a couple of songs from the movie and then she sang Fire Fire, after that she brought up Bonnie Raitt from the audience to sing Outside Man with her (apparently, Bonnie had sung Outside Man a number of years ago & Rosie talks about that in the movie). Then after Calypso Rose fired up the audience real good, she left and Crazy and Lords Relator & Superior all came back on stage together to do a whole extempo set. The band left and it was just the 3 of them and 2 guitars. They tried to recreate a Calypso Tent. It was just a real special treat for me, never having been to Trinidad----(yet). It's incredible how they can just come up with stuff off the cuff like that. They even made some commentaries about old Arnold-(by that time it was late and things were looking bad in the recall). I went to bed with sweet Calypso Dreams in my head.
