THE JOUVAY NATION, Contingent #56 had a good time down the Mission for the San Francisco carnaval. Camoflauge were the colors, we sprayed paint instead of bullets, and danced to a 1993 Spice tune "Guns". To the onlookers, especially those in the VIP stand like Jim Sowers, we apologize if some stray paint hit you......the spirit just felt so real we thought we were in Trinidad!! Our DJ tent on 19th and Mission was unbelievable as the party continued until 6 pm with all of the major bay area promoters passing through and many a local DJ getting on real bad to the soca music. Even one of Trinidad's biggest designers, Sonia Mack, passed by the tent with a model turning heads with one of her costumes. And yes she agreed to design a costume for Patricia to run for carnival queen in 2004.

Driving over the bay bridge at 7 am on Sunday morning into a foggy and damp San Francisco was not our idea of carnival, but thanks to the call of Kafi Payne who was already looking for our group, we made it to the Mission. By 10 am we were fed, painted, dancing and tipsy and one of our DJs, Lewis of Laventille, teased the Socaribbean contingent that they did not have saltfish and bake....something we graciously sold to them. We must thank our friends who helped in so many ways, most of all in coming out to support and pledging to return next year. Here's what they're saying:

I had so much fun jumping up with Jouvay.com during Carnaval 2003 in SF. Great theme, great music, great people, great time... Keep me posted on the next Jouvay.com event. I'll be there!

There is no question that by the time we left (I'm sure WE had something to do with it!), your tent was the rockingest place in the staging area--certainly the one with the nicest people and the most grooving folk, and the loudest most rhythmic music, and the best/most readily available Caribbean food. So congrats to all and keep up the good representin....

There we were playing dominoes with Mpho at Justin's brithday party held at Goapele's spot when Patricia and Mpho realized they were both Gemini. The idea of a Jouvay.com and Local1200 party with some Caribbean and African flavor was born. Local1200 consitutes a group of fresh DJs who have been holding it down in the bay for years. Two of their DJs, Sake1 and Namane will drop urban soul, hip hop, reggae and soukous/highlife whilst Complex will jam the soca and dancehall for us. At Tropic last week Goapele told Patricia that she was going to sing Happy Birthday for the Geminis in the house. It's going to be the kind of party where everyone looks good (club's got a dresscode), feels good and is just out to celebrate to all types of good music...cause we can. So, as the flyer says, you've got to wear white because when we turn on the balck lights at the Shattuck Down Low we want you to Glow. The theme song on our webpage by David Rudder and Alison Hinds was done for Ian Wiltshire's Glow fetes held in Trinidad during carnival. According to Namane the French have a similar kind of party called Sugar. Glow, Sugar, just remember Friday June 20th wear white to the local1200-jouvay.com fete. Our T-shirts will be on sale.

Looking for Caribbean groceries, restaurants, and entertainers in and close to the bay? Need to know about Reggae and soca festivals from LA to Humboldt? Read this article and use the information to find that enclave of Caribbean culture.

May 31, 2002 Jouvay.com brought Caribbean super star entertainer Rupee to Berkeley and since then we've seen him perform around the world. His song Tempted to Touch continues to crossover music genres, topping the charts in mainstream radio stations in North America. Take a moment to find out why this half German, half Barbadian singer who has a serious message to spread to youth, is loved by kids, grandmothers, and many a lady who he just may be "Tempted to Touch".

Added to the photogallery, pictures from the May 10th Jouvay.com party and from San Francisco's 2003 carnaval parade and festival and Carijama 2003.

BIG BEN

Jouvay.com’s Complex proposes a plan of action (statement, movement, drive, collaboration whatever you want to call it) for a black employees network. A BIG BEN that facilitates black employee networks at different companies in the bay area to meet. The individual black employee networks at each company can increase its offerings and membership by having the ability to offer access to BEN members at different companies. He says, “it will take a lot of work. Yes, I am volunteering. No, I do not have too much time on my hands. I’m asking people to send me contacts, and information on the types of networking events they want.”

The first event is tentatively scheduled for September and will be held in conjunction with NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), NABA (National Association of Black Accountants), Black MBA's Association and any other professional organizations that are interested. Complex feels that, “You never know when you will need to network. People who have been laid off with children and bills to pay, know what I mean. I hope that we can all share this vision, and I encourage folks to be active in their own Black Employee Associations.” Contact Complex if you are interested.
