Barbados travel guide
BARBADOS, the Jouvay.com Experience...

Our roots are well planted in Barbados. Complex was born in the States to Barbadian parents, but will let you know that his family populates a large portion of St. George and Christ Church, a rummage through his fridge will reveal an endless supply of conkie and flying fish, and anytime you visit Barbados he'll ask you to bring him a Bim and a Juicee drink. Maya has scoped nearly every bar, club, pool hall, and beach on the 166 square mile island since her dad moved there for work in 1998. Some of the information you'll find here won't reflect the real "Lonely Planet type tourist guide" as we stay with family, and eat home cooked meals, but many of the links below will lead you to tourist and entertainment information that will keep you happy in Barbados. 2 Juks for the Yankee $.

Barbados Jazz Festival (January)

From Complex: Mustards in
Bridgetown has the best macaroni pie.
The menu serves local dishes, and you
just go to the counter, buy your food
and hopefully find a table 'cause it's
crowded during lunchtime. Chefette of
course is the local fast food joint that
even serves a good curry and roti (and
has an extensive salad bar
).

Little facts: If you plan to exercise,
most Bajans run or hit the sea just
before sunrise. A popular running spot
is around the horse racing track at the
Garrison. Oistins on a Friday night
not only has the biggest lime and good
fish, but you'll find the most serious
oldies dancers...just look for the
place with a crowd of onlookers.

You need a Bajan driving permit which
you get in about 10 minutes after you
fill out your form and pay a small fee. It
lasts for 1 year.

Maya's Log (Kadooment 2003, Christmas 2002):

A Typical week: Thursday night Ship Inn (favorite bartender Richard and you'll see Germaine and For the People perform..excellent R&B type group of whom many are Guyanese), Friday night Oistins, maybe Harbor Lights (walk with your own crowd, drinks are included all night...imagine all that Mount Gay or Cockspur rum), Saturday night ...wherever's got Peter Coppin, Malcolm X, a band performing, or a Baje or Power X Four event, Sunday evening Carib Beach Bar (favorite bartender Jan). Any other time check in at Bomba's bar by the Coach House beach (great lunch buffet at Coach House restaurant). Favorite bartender at Bombas is Wayne..just say you're a friend of the Guyanese Taliban...that's a friend of Maya's who ran the jet skis with Roger...drop these names and you might get a discount. Weiser's is another great bar on Brandon beach. The sand is a bit rocky there, but early early in the morning the water is like a sheet of glass. Walk up the beach past the power plant (be aware of the hot spot out there with undercurrents that have caused many fatalities) and you'll discover Paradise beach, a real hot shot resort back in the 80's now desolate due to Barbados' refusal to privatize the beach for the property owner (who just happens to own Sandals resorts). Keep walking towards the West coast, you might have to detour on the road and you'll discover Paynes bay which is glorious in the afternoon. On the South coast Accra is always busy with a Chefette across the street. Head towards Carib or Dover and you'll run into a pizza restaurant at the entrance to Sandy Beach. The beach lives up to its name and the two storey two bedroom white apartments on the beach are really great to rent. If you're looking for a great place to eat Christmas lunch check out Atlantis by Bathsheba. Actually, just check out the East Coast terrain. A more pricey dinner would be a Champers in Christ Church and a quick treat would be at TNT bbq by the Cavehill campus. And if your flight is delayed, just hop a cab to Miami beach for one last dip in the sea. Check out Stephen Mendes' Beach Photogallery.

New clubs seem to come in waves in Barbados. December 1999 the rave was Baku with its owner who refuses to play soca on a Saturday night because it attracts "the wrong crowd" according to him (pity the place has got such a lovely layout by the water), December 2002 the rave was Skyy where hot shot stars hung out (yes, many times there will be private jets at Grantley Adams airport belonging to the likes of Eminem, Madonna, even the Bristish Prime Minister) and Maya and Alesia got to meet Beenie Man, August 2003 it's all about Club Xtreme right opposite Sandy Beach Hotel. The one staple where a good show can always be expected is the Boatyard. Other than for a Baje fete I've never been to Plantations, but according to one taxi driver Plantations with John King's band is the best place for entertainment.

For all of the quiet nights in Barbados, the only place that seems to have anything going on would be in the St. Lawrence gap. The Reggae Lounge is always fun and don't give up hope, people arrive very late and the DJs are quite friendly. If you're looking for cool jewelry or original rasta doll type gifts, you've got to go through the gap and ask for Rastaman Robert or email us for his number.
