Masakenari
sits on a mountain in an area called Kanashen which spreads across
Guyana's southern border with Brazil. According to anthropologist
Stephanie Aleman, "the
real spelling of Kanashen is "Kaanashenay" which
breaks down into Kaan (God) a (you) she (or xe - loves) nay (here)
- God loves you here - the name of the missionary village established
in the 1950's." The Wai Wai own this 1.6 million
acre site which represents one of the last remaining pristine forests
in South America.
